Welcome To Heartland Equine Rescue, Inc.

Our rescue works to assist Equine in need in/around the Southern Indiana area and surrounding states. We work with Law Enforcement and Individual Owners.

We have locations in Oakland City, IN and Corydon, IN and 3 other satellite locations with other board members in Southern Indiana that are foster specific to the Heartland Horses. We do accept volunteers.

Our Mission

Heartland Equine Rescue, Inc. believes that horses deserve a second chance. Our goal is to give horses a safe place to land, rehabilitate them, retrain them and rehome them. If a horse is unable to be rehomed due to age or medical condition and has a quality of life, our rescue will house them for the remainder of their lifetime.

Our organization cannot do the work we do without your support. We don’t receive any state or federal funding and none of our volunteers or board members receive a salary. Every dime donated goes to the horses in our care. We believe in transparency and frequently post our Vet Bills or feed bills on our Facebook page. If you have any questions about what our donations are used for, please use the contact form to get in touch with us!

Thank you - It takes a community to save these horses.

Adoptable Horses

DUNCAN
DOLLY

DUNCAN - 9yo 16h Thoroughbred Cross Gelding - 9/2024 - He will be going back for some training hopefully in the next couple of months.

Duncan has had 60 days of training.
He has gone on trails and gotten up to walk/trot but not yet canter.
He feels more confident with another horse/rider.
No buck, bite, kick.
Stands tied, loads and good for farrier.
Duncan is an "in your pocket" type. He is so sweet, a bit needy, playful. He gets along with geldings or mares.

Duncan can truly go ANY direction with the right person.
Utd on dental, vaccines, worming and Coggins.

"PASTURE COMPANION ONLY"

Dolly is a 24yo Mare that came into the rescue the fall of 2022. The Vet feels she has an old ligament injury that doesn't affect her during normal activities, but recommended she not be ridden. That being said, Dolly is easy to handle, loads well, LOVES to be groomed, and does well for the farrier. She would make anyone a lovely companion who just wants to enjoy a beautiful horse.

Adoption Fee: $300.

Lola is an Appy/Paint Mare 14.1 Hands 12 years in age. She is ready for a new home as she has had 30 days of refresher training. She needs a beginner with some experience. She isn’t spooky and is sensible on the trails. She gets along with mares or geldings.

Adoption Fee: $2,000

Whiskey is a 25yo TWH Gelding. He is more whoa than go and SAFE for a family who just wants a sweet companion to take nice rides around the farm or short trails. He is friendly and sweet and in your pocket type. He is healthy and sound. He needs occasional eye drops, but they are inexpensive and only needed if he has a flare up. He will require a fly mask to protect his eyes on sunny summer days!!!

Adoption Fee: 500.

Mattie is a wonderful trail horse! She loves loves loves to hit the trails!! She is sensible, not spooky and has a motor when you ask for one. She would be a fun trail companion for anyone with some experience. She gets along with mares or geldings, she does well on solo trail rides as well.

Adoption Fee: $1,500.00

Archie is available! He needs a patient and understanding home as he is still a little scared at times. He has done so well with his groundwork training though. He is a 1 year old gelding, 9.5H. He likes other horses or mini’s. His adoption fee is $500.

Merry is a 14yo Welsh Pony. She is going to have a metabolic panel done shortly and then be accessed and listed for adoption. She is broke to ride and was used as a prior lesson pony.

Poppy the Pony!! We are evaluating this guy to see what kind of home he will need. He came to us with some bad scars from whatever his former life entailed. He is blind in one eye but it doesn’t seem to bother him at all. We hope to be able to place him for adoption in the early fall.

HORSES IN REHAB

Hazel is a 12 yo OTTB. She was in training where it was discovered she had an old injury. She is now at one of our facilities and will settle in and be evaluated for possibly a companion only home. She is one of the sweetest horses we have!

Grace - 13yo TWH Mare. She came to us with a foal. Her foal has since been adopted. Mama is a loving horse, easy to handle and just the sweetest personality ever!! Sadly she has DSLD a condition that is not treatable. At this time though she is comfortable and the Vet has made a few suggestions for us to help her continue to thrive. She still needs to gain some weight as well while in rehab.

“THE LUCKY 5”

These 5 sweeties were rescued from a trader lot so that the cycle of being sent around from auction to auction could end for them. Each one has had 30 days of QT and the boys have been gelded. Everyone has had feet done, and teeth floated/checked and received vaccinations and deworming. They are working on gaining weight and getting healthy.

Now the healing begins.

In order; Emma (RIP Sweet Emma). She ended up with cancer and had to be put to rest. We are deeply saddened.

Her feet are in horrible condition and it will take a few months to get the severe thrush out of her feet and several trimmings to get her back to normal.

Diana - she is very frightened of people still and while you can lead her, she is definitely easily scared. We will be working with her to get her over that fear and prepare her for adoption.

Poppy the mule is very very scared of anything human. She is being worked with at the trainers place to learn to be able to be handled and hopefully trust people.

Jessie - he is a cute 18 month old QH cross that recently was gelded. He LOVES attention and is so very sweet. He should be available in the fall for adoption!

Archie - MOVED TO ADOPTION AREA. The little paint gelding is handsome as they come. He is really starting to trust people and we will be working with him to get more handling so that he can go to a new adoptive family in the fall.

HORSES IN REHAB

EBONY - 20yo Rocky Mt. Mare. We are waiting on results of her bloodwork to know how to proceed with her rebab.

UPDATE: Ebony is being treated for EPM at this time and doing a bit better than she initially was.

Susie is a jenny that came in from an auction situation. She had a neurological condition which medication has seemed to have kept under control now. She is still not trusting of people at this time. She prefers the companion of other equine, but not so much humans. We hope to keep working with her so at some point she may become adoptable.

Horses In Rehab

GIDEON - He came to us with a severe leg injury that wasn’t being treated properly. He is currently undergoing debriding and bandage changes regular at the Vets Office. He is doing very well all things considered.

Chi Chi is a 28yo Paso Fino Gelding. He is currently in rehab to gain some weight. He also has cushings and is on regular medication for his condition.

Did you know about our programs?

Heartland Equine Rescue works with those in our community who may have fallen on hard times. When we are able we will assist with Feed or Medical or Farrier care. We feel that it is better for horses to stay in loving homes if we can provide some temporary help to their owners.
Look for more information coming soon on “Annie’s Fund”. This fund will be specifically under our 501c3 organization and be specific for helping those horses with owners that are in need. The fund is in honor of a very special lady who spent her life advocating for Equine.

Heartland Equine also offers an “Owner Assisted Placement Program”. Let’s be honest, rescues are often full and we can’t always say “yes” to taking in an owner surrender. So we offer a program where we agree to help place your horse. We require adoption application and contract as we would for a horse in our program and your horse can be rehomed “SAFELY”. If there is an urgent need to immediately place the horse and we cannot assist, we will network to help you find options to place the horse safely with someone else.

ANNIE’S FUND

Annie’s Fund is a program designed to help people & their horses “short term” with Vetting, Farrier, Housing with financial assistance. Each case is reviewed and discussed with our team members. The fund is limited so unfortunately we cannot always help everyone, but we will do our best to accommodate your situation. Please contact us at our email here on the page and we will discuss things further with you. Our goal with this fund is to help horses remain in their current loving homes versus having to enter a rescue or be sold where their future safety might be questionable.

PLEASE EMAIL US FOR AN APPLICATION IF YOU ARE NEEDING ASSISTANCE AT: HEARTLANDEQUINE@YAHOO.COM
