Welcome To Heartland Equine Rescue, Inc.

Our rescue works to assist Equine in need in/around the Southern Indiana area and surrounding states. We work with Law Enforcement and Individual Owners. We take in any breed of equine.

Our Mission

Heartland Equine Rescue, Inc. believes that horses deserve a second chance. Our goal is to give horses a safe place to land, rehabilitate them, retrain them and rehome them. If a horse is unable to be rehomed due to age or medical condition and has a quality of life, our rescue will house them for the remainder of their lifetime.

LIGHTENING - 8YO Rocky Mountain Gelding. He has been under saddle training now for 60 days. He did have a bout of ulcers which sadly put him behind on the training schedule. He is just finishing up training and will be available in March 2025.

He will require an ‘advanced/intermediate’ rider.

Gideon! This handsome Thoroughbred Gelding is 25 years young! He loves other horses and would love to be a pasture companion.

Adoption Fee: $300.00

MERRY - 14yo Welsh Mare. She is broke to ride and has been ridden by kids. She is not for the inexperienced child. She is going to training to have a refresh in her ground manners so that she is easier to handle for kids. She can be a little spicy pony girl at times. :) She can do small jumps as well. She has had recent xrays and is cleared for riding. Merry is taking Prascend at this time. We are going to re-run her panels to see if that is still needed. You certainly cannot tell she has a thing wrong with her as active and fun as she is!!

Watch for her updates coming Spring 2025.

HORSES IN REHAB

Grace - 13yo TWH Mare. She came to us with a foal. Her foal has since been adopted. Mama is a loving horse, easy to handle and just the sweetest personality ever!! Sadly she has DSLD a condition that is not treatable. At this time though she is comfortable and the Vet has made a few suggestions for us to help her continue to thrive. She still needs to gain some weight as well while in rehab.

Daphne - 12yo Jenny. UPDATE: BABY JACK BORN 2/19/2025 AT 2:59PM!!!! Mama & baby are doing great!! She is such a good mama. She is just learning to start to trust us and pick up her feet. She came to us in very poor condition with sores on her body, limping so badly she could barely walk off the trailer. She will remain in rehab at this time due to her condition.

Poppy - She is one of the “lucky 5” that came from a trader’s lot. She has progressed in letting females get close to her and even touch her. She is at the training facility and they will be doing more extensive work with her in spring (2025) when temps are a bit warmer to see if they can get her to come around for being a riding partner.

Honey - this poor sweet girl had much trouble walking when she recently came to us. She’s had her feet done, and also x-rays and they feel with proper trimming she will recover just fine . She is a beautiful dark honey color with dapples, and the prettiest blue eyes you’ve ever seen!! She will be heading to training in Spring 2025 to learn ground manners and saddle training (once she is fully rehabbed). She is approximately 12-13 years in age, and about 14H.

Misty - 20yr old Mare. She came to us with her friend Belle also listed here. Their owner was no longer able to property care for them and turned them over to the rescue. Misty will be rehabbing for 30-60 days and then get a refresher under saddle. She will be a wonderful horse for some lucky family!

Belle - 20yr old Mare. She came to us with her friend Misty. Their owner was no longer able to care for them so they were turned over to the rescue. Belle will rehab for 30 days and then begin a refresh under saddle. She will be a great horse for someone. So easy to handle on the ground!!

Mr. Poppie!! This blind sweetheart is doing well in his foster home. He is making progress and seems to have a few favorite folks in his life that he feels safe with. We hope he continues to make progress and realize that people aren’t bad. He is very sweet, just very shy.

PERMANENT RESIDENTS

Rosie is a mid 20’s TWH Mare. She had severely foundered multiple times before coming to our rescue. She is doing so well and has had no further laminitis episodes. Her best friend is Lightening also pictured here. She will remain with us for the remainder of her lifetime.

Susie came to us from a local auction. She was quite thin and so afraid of people. It took almost an hour to walk her to the trailer step by step with reassuring voices. She has taken a very long time to trust the people she lives with and therefore we feel its in her best interest to remain with us. She just isn’t sure about strangers still. She is a joy to be around and while still hard to catch at times we love her.

Annie is a senior Belgian Mare that is mostly blind. She loves hanging out with her horse pals in the pasture and has really come a long way in learning to trust people. She has really bonded to her human foster parents. It’s incredible to watch how this once untrusting big girl now feels so comfortable around people and her surroundings. She will remain with Heartland for the remainder of her lifetime.

Chi Chi is a 30yo Paso Fino Gelding. He has Cushings Disease, and requires a special diet due to his age. He will remain with Heartland for the remainder of his life.

Kat is a 27yo Appy Mare. She is completely blind. She has adjusted very well in her foster home and has a lot of horse friends she loves to pal around with. Kat will remain with Heartland for the remainder of her lifetime.

Bradley & Brandy came to us in 2020 thru a neglect case. They are mother/daughter pair. Brandy had an extensive hoof infection which went into her leg, and Bradley needs injections due to a coffin bone issue. Both are the sweetest horses you’d ever want to meet but due to their special needs, they will remain with us for their lifetime.

Did you know about our programs?

Heartland Equine Rescue works with those in our community who may have fallen on hard times. When we are able we will assist with Feed or Medical or Farrier care. We feel that it is better for horses to stay in loving homes if we can provide some temporary help to their owners.
Look for more information coming soon on “Annie’s Fund”. This fund will be specifically under our 501c3 organization and be specific for helping those horses with owners that are in need. The fund is in honor of a very special lady who spent her life advocating for Equine.

Heartland Equine also offers an “Owner Assisted Placement Program”. Let’s be honest, rescues are often full and we can’t always say “yes” to taking in an owner surrender. So we offer a program where we agree to help place your horse. We require adoption application and contract as we would for a horse in our program and your horse can be rehomed “SAFELY”. If there is an urgent need to immediately place the horse and we cannot assist, we will network to help you find options to place the horse safely with someone else.

Pictured is “Dixie” a horse who needed an eye removal surgery her owner couldn’t afford. The owner was going to surrender her because of this so that she could get this surgery. We Kept Dixie in her home, and she had her surgery. This is what Annie’s Fund helps to pay for. This horse had been with her owner for years…..we are so glad she could stay in her home where she belongs.

ANNIE’S FUND - In Memory Of Annie Haag, horse advocate and much loved friend.

Annie’s Fund is a program designed to help people & their horses “short term” with Vetting, Farrier, Housing with financial assistance. Each case is reviewed and discussed with our team members. The fund is limited so unfortunately we cannot always help everyone, but we will do our best to accommodate your situation. Please contact us at our email here on the page and we will discuss things further with you. Our goal with this fund is to help horses remain in their current loving homes versus having to enter a rescue or be sold where their future safety might be questionable.

PLEASE EMAIL US FOR AN APPLICATION IF YOU ARE NEEDING ASSISTANCE AT: HEARTLANDEQUINE@YAHOO.COM

If you would like to donate specifically for this fund, please contact us from this web page or at: heartlandequine@yahoo.com Funds are kept separately for helping horses in memory of our wonderful friend Annie H. We cannot do this program without the kindness of our community.
